Big School Readiness Skills

 April 10, 2023

By  Josh Baro

As your child gets ready to start ‘big school’ (primary or elementary school), it's important to make sure they have the skills they need to be successful. Here are a few key readiness skills to focus on:

  1. Reading readiness. Before starting first grade, children should be able to recognize the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. They should also be able to blend these sounds together to read simple words. Encourage your child to read at home, and provide them with a variety of books at their reading level.
  2. Writing readiness. First graders should be able to hold a pencil correctly and form letters and numbers. They should also be able to write their own name and simple words. Encourage your child to practise writing at home, and provide them with age-appropriate writing activities.
  3. Maths readiness. First graders should be able to count to 100 and understand basic concepts like more and less. They should also be able to recognize and write numbers up to 20. Encourage your child to practise counting and basic maths skills at home, and provide them with age-appropriate maths activities.
  4. Social and emotional readiness. First grade can be a big transition, with new routines and expectations. Children should be able to follow classroom rules and routines and ask for help when needed. Encourage your child to practise social skills at home, and talk to them about their feelings and concerns about starting first grade.
  5. Attention and focus. First graders are expected to sit and listen for longer periods of time, and to focus on their work. Encourage your child to practise paying attention and following directions at home, and provide them with age-appropriate activities that require concentration and focus.

By focusing on these key readiness skills, you can help your child be successful in first grade and beyond.
